Placenta Accreta
The first thing that should be stated is placenta accreta is a severe problem and is not a common condition. It affects approximately 1 in fewer than 200,000 births.
What is Placenta Accreta?
Placenta accreta is a condition that typically occurs with moms that have had a C- Section or other uterine surgery. It’s a situation where the placenta grows too deeply into the wall of the uterus due to abnormalities in the lining of the uterus. The placenta can even grow through the uterine wall which is called placenta percreta, or even into the muscle (placenta increta). This is a very high risk situation that may even involve a hysterectomy. After delivery, this can cause a loss of an immense amount of blood or hemorrhage.
How Does Placenta Accreta Happen?
- Surgery. The most common way is from surgeries on the Uterus, but in very rare situations can happen without any surgeries.
- Placenta Positioning. Placenta previa is a condition where the placenta either sits low in the uterus or blocks it. This can cause placenta accreta.
- Moms Age. This is a condition that can happen to women more commonly when they are past their mid 30’s.
- Many Children. The number ot pregnancies a mother has had can also increase the risk.
Are There Symptoms?
Not typically. Once in a while, there may be bleeding in the third trimester.
How Is It Discovered?
If you feel you might be a candidate for this rare condition seek medical attention as soon as possible. It can be found through medical imaging and testing.
